About This Coin
The 2001 American Buffalo Commemorative Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized in 2001 to support the National Museum of the American Indian, this dollar recreates the beloved designs of the 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. Fraser's original models included Iron Tail (Sioux), Big Tree (Kiowa), and Two Moons (Cheyenne) for the obverse, and Black Diamond, a bison at the Central Park Zoo, for the reverse. The obverse features a profile of a Native American chief, adapted from James Earle Fraser's iconic 1913 Buffalo nickel design, while the reverse displays an American bison standing on a mound, also adapted from the Buffalo nickel. Designed by James Earle Fraser. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The American Buffalo dollar revived one of the most beloved designs in U.S. coinage history and became one of the best-selling modern commemoratives, with sales exceeding 500,000 coins.
