About This Coin
The 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial Commemorative Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Part of a three-coin program celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty's dedication in 1886, this silver dollar was authorized by Congress (Public Law 99-61). Surcharges raised over $83 million for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island — the most successful U.S. commemorative coin program to date in terms of fundraising. The obverse features the full Statue of Liberty with the Registry Room of Ellis Island in the background, while the reverse displays Liberty's torch rising above an excerpt from Emma Lazarus's poem: 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free'. Designed by John M. Mercanti/Mathew Peloso. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The 1986 Statue of Liberty dollar remains one of the most popular modern commemoratives, with combined proof and uncirculated sales exceeding 6 million coins.
