About This Coin
The 1987 United States Constitution Bicentennial Commemorative Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787, this dollar was part of a two-coin program including a $5 gold piece. Surcharges supported the restoration and maintenance of the National Archives. The obverse features a large quill pen laid across a sheaf of parchment with 'We the People' in script, surrounded by thirteen stars, while the reverse displays a cross-section of Americans in diverse garb, representing the broad cultural and social spectrum of the nation. Designed by Patricia Lewis Verani. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Constitution dollar's elegant quill-and-parchment design is widely regarded as one of the most attractive modern commemorative designs, and it was one of the best-selling silver commemoratives of the 1980s.
