About This Coin

The 1988 Seoul Olympiad Commemorative Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized by Congress to support the U.S. Olympic Committee for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, this dollar was part of a two-coin program including a $5 gold piece. The dual-torch obverse symbolizes the passing of the Olympic spirit between nations. The obverse features two hands — one holding the Statue of Liberty's torch and the other holding the Olympic torch — their flames merging at the top, framed by two olive branches, while the reverse displays the five interlocking Olympic rings with 'USA' above and olive branches on either side. Designed by Patricia Lewis Verani. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Seoul Olympiad dollar's symbolic merging of the torches of Liberty and the Olympics makes it one of the more artistically ambitious modern commemorative designs.
