Description

The 2001 (D) Buffalo Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the Denver Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 227,131 examples. Authorized in 2001 to support the National Museum of the American Indian, this dollar recreates the beloved designs of the 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. The obverse features a profile of a Native American chief, adapted from James Earle Fraser's iconic 1913 Buffalo nickel design, while the reverse displays an American bison standing on a mound, also adapted from the Buffalo nickel. Designed by James Earle Fraser. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9793. The American Buffalo dollar revived one of the most beloved designs in U.S. coinage history and became one of the best-selling modern commemoratives, with sales exceeding 500,000 coins.
