About This Coin
The 1997 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Commemorative Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized to support the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., which honors federal, state, and local law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The memorial, dedicated in 1991, bears the names of more than 22,000 officers. The obverse features two U.S. Park Police officers making a rubbing of a fellow officer's name from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall, while the reverse displays a shield representing all law enforcement with a rose laid across it, symbolizing sacrifice. Designed by Alfred Maletsky. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Law Enforcement dollar's memorial wall scene parallels the Vietnam Veterans Memorial dollar, both capturing the deeply personal act of touching an engraved name.
