About This Coin
The 1997 Jackie Robinson Commemorative Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson's courage in the face of intense racial hostility changed not only baseball but American society. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1947, MVP in 1949, and inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. The obverse features jackie Robinson sliding into home plate, referencing his famous steal during the 1955 World Series, while the reverse displays the 50th anniversary logo of the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Designed by William C. Cousins/James Peed. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Jackie Robinson dollar is among the most historically significant modern commemoratives, honoring one of the most important figures in American civil rights and sports history.
