About This Coin
The 1994 United States Capitol Bicentennial Commemorative Dollar is a United States commemorative dollar. Authorized to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Capitol building, this dollar recognizes the seat of American democracy since 1800. The Capitol has been expanded and renovated many times since its original construction, with the current dome completed during the Civil War. The obverse features the U.S. Capitol rotunda dome with the Statue of Freedom atop, surrounded by thirteen five-pointed stars, while the reverse displays the Arms of Congress, based on a stained glass window near the grand staircases of the House and Senate. Designed by William C. Cousins/John Mercanti. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Capitol Bicentennial dollar is one of several commemoratives featuring the Capitol building, but its focus on the dome and the unique Arms of Congress reverse make it distinct.
