1970-D Variety WMHR-002

Description

The SD-2 Working Master Hub Reverse variety appears at the 1970-D Washington Quarter as WMHR-002, the Denver Mint counterpart to the Philadelphia SD-2 issue catalogued as 1970 WMHR-002. The CONECA SD-2 classification distinguishes this hub from SD-1 through the rounded leaf to the left of the arrowheads — a consistent feature across every die produced from this hub, whether at Philadelphia or Denver. The simultaneous existence of SD-1 (WMHR-001) and SD-2 (WMHR-002) at the 1970-D date illustrates how both master hubs could contribute dies to the same mint in the same year. The center-directed spread on QUARTER DOLLAR and the lower wreath is the shared hub-doubling characteristic, while the leaf shape is the diagnostic for hub identification. Working dies with the exact same doubling are known to exist for the years 1968 through 1970 from all three Mints including proof coins. Differences in the appearance of the doubling will result from master hub wear, master die wear, working hub wear, working die wear, as well as coin wear. A second similar doubled master hub exists for this time period with the main difference being the leave directly to the left of the arrowheads. On the other doubled master hub that leave is pointed at the top.
