Recorded by CudsOnCoins as CU-25c-1970D-02, this Denver Washington Quarter is the second documented cud for the 1970-D issue. Two cuds on a single date and mint confirms that die rim failures were not isolated during Denver's modest 1970 quarter production. The clad composition of copper-nickel bonded to a pure copper core, standard since 1965, subjected dies to different wear patterns than the earlier 90% silver alloy. John Flanagan's Washington portrait and heraldic eagle reverse constituted the quarter's design from 1932 through 1998, and nearly four decades of continuous use meant die production was highly standardized. Cud varieties are classified by location — obverse or reverse, clock position relative to design elements, and angular extent of the rim break.
