Description

The first documented cud for the 1970-D date, CU-25c-1970D-01 from CudsOnCoins records a die rim fracture on this Denver Washington Quarter. The 1970-D quarter is numismatically significant because Denver produced relatively few quarters that year — output had decreased as the Mint managed coin distribution following the mid-1960s hoarding crisis. Mintmarks returned to coins in 1968 after the three-year hiatus, and the D mintmark confirms Denver production. John Flanagan's Washington obverse, in continuous use since 1932, paired with his heraldic eagle reverse through 1998 before the State Quarters program introduced commemorative reverses. Cuds form when die rim segments fracture under repeated striking stress, leaving raised featureless areas where the broken die can no longer transfer design detail. The copper-nickel clad composition adopted in 1965 changed die wear patterns compared to the silver era, as the harder material imposed different stresses on working dies. As the foundational cud for this date and mint, CU-25c-1970D-01 establishes the baseline for die rim failure research on the low-mintage 1970-D quarter.
