2022 Variety WMDR-001
Error
Description
Unlike most doubled die varieties confined to individual working dies, this 2022 Philadelphia Maya Angelou Quarter WMDR-001 exhibits master die doubling — a hub-level anomaly that propagated to most or all working dies from the affected master. This means the doubling appears across the entire production run to varying degrees. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2022-P 25-cent MA WMDR-001, the master die doubling produces a visual effect that can be confused with another feature: doubled earrings on the portrait. Researchers caution that these earrings from master die doubling should not be mistaken for die rings — concentric impressions caused by die fatigue rather than hub displacement. The Maya Angelou Quarter, first coin in the American Women Quarters Program, depicts the poet with arms upraised before a bird in flight. The master die origin makes WMDR-001 one of the most widely available doubled die varieties in modern coinage, as virtually every specimen carries some degree of the anomaly.

These should not be confused with die rings, which appear similar, and are listed in the Wexler UFO files here .
