1970-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Presenting a compelling dual-intensity profile, the 1970-D Washington Quarter DDO-003 exhibits strong spread on LIBERTY alongside light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST — the primary motto showing substantially more pronounced doubling than the secondary inscription on John Flanagan's obverse portrait of George Washington. The strong intensity on LIBERTY means the secondary contours are clearly visible under moderate magnification, while the light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST requires more careful examination. This differential intensity across inscription areas reflects the geometry of hub displacement: elements positioned along the axis of maximum displacement show the strongest effects, while those nearer the pivot or perpendicular to the displacement axis show less. Die markers UVC-1205 and DMR-010 identify this working die. The reverse is classified as Reverse Die Variety RDV-007. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both obverse and reverse confirmed in mid-die state, and Stage C tentatively in late die state (unconfirmed). Cataloged by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint regular strike was produced in copper-nickel clad composition. Begin with LIBERTY where the strong spread is most accessible, then examine IN GOD WE TRUST under higher magnification for the subtler light doubling.
