Description

Exhibiting Class II distorted hub doubling, the 1969-S Jefferson Nickel WDDO-001 shows very close doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST across Felix Schlag's obverse portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Class II doubling results from a tilted or pivoted hub during die creation, producing distortion rather than the uniform directional shift of Class I varieties. The very close spread means the secondary impression sits nearly atop the primary, making careful magnification essential. A die scratch to the left of the L in LIBERTY serves as the primary obverse die marker, offering independent confirmation of the working die. No significant reverse markers have been documented. The 1969-S Jefferson Nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a regular circulation strike — not a proof. During the 1968-1970 period, San Francisco produced both business strikes and proofs for the nickel denomination. The coin was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel at 5.0 grams. Examine IN GOD WE TRUST under 10x magnification for the very close Class II distortion, then verify the die scratch left of the L in LIBERTY to confirm attribution to WDDO-001.
