Description

Attributed by Tison Meadows, WDDR-034 is a Class II Distorted Hub Doubling variety on the 1969-S Jefferson Nickel where the doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA, increasing in strength from left to right across the reverse inscriptions. Two obverse die cracks in Jefferson's hair near the top of his head provide critical attribution markers — progressive die cracks like these can strengthen or extend as the die accumulates strikes, potentially allowing specimens to be sequenced within the die's service life. The reverse carries a slanted die gouge at the top right edge of the E of AMERICA, another persistent marker that aids confident identification. Thirty-four cataloged doubled die reverses for the 1969-S nickel represent one of the deepest DDR inventories for any single Jefferson Nickel date-mintmark combination.
