1969-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013
Error
Description
Attributed by Whaden Curtis, this 1969-S Jefferson Nickel WDDR-013 exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling — a type caused by the working hub flexing or distorting during the die-sinking process rather than shifting position. A close spread toward the center is visible on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the doubling intensity decreasing from left to right across the legend. This graduated effect is characteristic of distorted hub varieties, where the hub deformation concentrates at one side and diminishes as it approaches the opposite edge. Die markers confirm the specific die pair: the reverse carries a die crack running from the lower side of the E in UNITED to the rim, along with a short die gouge extending from the top center of the R in PLURIBUS halfway toward the rim. No obverse die markers have been noted. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1969-S WDDR-013, this variety demonstrates how distorted hub doubling produces a distinctive directional spread pattern that differs fundamentally from the symmetrical displacement seen in other doubled die classes.
