1968-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-005
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista and cross-referenced as FS-502 (Fivaz-Stanton #502), this 1968-S Roosevelt Dime is among the most significant doubled die varieties in the clad proof dime series. DDO-005 exhibits light spread and extra thickness on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the JS designer's initials for John R. Sinnock, and a diagnostically important split lower 9 of the date — where the base of the numeral shows clear separation into two distinct lines. The obverse die is additionally listed as RPM-001 (Repunched Mintmark), making this a dual-variety coin combining hub doubling with mintmark repunching on the same die. The reverse is cataloged as RDV-001, representing a weak flame variety on the torch. Die markers UVC-516 and DMR-007 track this die through three stages: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State. The 1968-S proof Roosevelt Dime was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at 2.27 grams on 17.9mm planchets at the San Francisco Mint, which had assumed exclusive proof production duties beginning that year after the Philadelphia Mint handled special mint sets from 1965 through 1967. The convergence of DDO, RPM, and RDV on a single die pairing makes this a particularly desirable variety for attribution specialists.
