Description

Class I counterclockwise spread — the most recognized hub doubling pattern — manifests across the date, designer's initials JS, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY on this 1968-S Proof Roosevelt Dime, the primary doubled die obverse for the date. Designated WDDO-001 by the Wexler Team, the variety carries significant cross-references: CONECA 8-O-I and Cherrypickers' Guide FS-10-1968-102 (020.2), giving it recognition across three major attribution systems. The 1968-S proof marks the resumption of proof coinage at the San Francisco Mint after the three-year suspension (1965-1967) when Special Mint Sets replaced proof production. This was also the year the Mint began using S mintmarks on proof coins exclusively from San Francisco — a policy that continues today. The reverse is identified as a Type 1 reverse, distinguishing it from the later Type 2 reverse introduced during the clad era. No significant obverse or reverse die markers beyond the doubling have been noted. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt portrait, originally designed in 1946, was in its twenty-third year on copper-nickel clad at 17.9mm. The CCW spread is best observed on the date and IGWT, where counterclockwise displacement creates measurable separation between the primary and secondary impressions.
