1968-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Marking the first S-mint proof doubled die reverse cataloged for the Roosevelt Dime series, the 1968-S WDDR-001 displays Class V clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 1:00. Carrying the Wexler designation 1968-S 10 cent Proof WDDR-001, the spread is visible on USA, One Dime, E Plu, the bottom of the oak branch, the lower oak leaves, and the left side of the flames. This is a Type 1 reverse, an important distinction in Roosevelt Dime collecting where the Type 1 and Type 2 reverses differ in band and detail characteristics. The reverse carries a vertical die gouge inside the lower R in AMERICA and another inside the lower C. The examined specimen was in late die state, suggesting that earlier die state examples may exhibit more pronounced doubling. The 1968-S was the first year San Francisco produced proof-only dimes for collector sets.
