When the Coinage Act of 1965 eliminated silver from circulating coinage, John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt dime design transitioned seamlessly to a copper-nickel clad composition that has continued for over six decades — making the Roosevelt dime the longest-running design on a circulating U.S. denomination without a major design change. The series includes some of the most celebrated proof errors in American numismatics: the 1968 No S proof, 1970 No S proof, and 1975 No S proof, all struck at San Francisco without the expected S mintmark, are extreme rarities with populations in the single digits and values exceeding $100,000. Silver proof versions returned in 1992 as part of premium proof sets, restoring 90% silver to the Roosevelt dime for the collector market. Struck at 17.9mm and 2.27 grams in clad composition, billions of Roosevelt dimes have entered circulation annually from the Philadelphia and Denver mints. The series is universally accessible in circulated grades but offers depth through die varieties, proof types, and certified high-grade specimens from years where gem survival is limited. Various annual proof finishes (standard clad, silver, reverse proof) provide collecting variety. Roosevelt's continuous presence on the dime since 1946 has made his portrait arguably the most familiar image in American small change.
