Description

Recognized as a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die variety, this 1968 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDO-005 showcases very strong Class I rotated hub doubling — the most dramatic doubling class, where rotational misalignment between hub and die produces spread fanning outward from a pivot point. The doubling is prominent across IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and designer initials FS, providing multiple attribution points visible under moderate magnification. On the obverse, a die gouge to the left of the front of Jefferson's collar serves as a secondary marker. Reverse die markers include a die scratch to the right of the S in PLURIBUS, a scratch between the F and I of FIVE, and a scratch inside the long right window of Monticello. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar in the Wexler reference system. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1968-D Jefferson Nickel was produced during an era of high Denver mintages. The "Best Of" designation confirms WDDO-005 as one of the premier doubled die obverse varieties in the Jefferson Nickel series, prized for the strength and clarity of its Class I rotational spread.
