1968-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Produced at the Denver Mint, this 1968-D Jefferson Nickel carries Class II distorted hub doubling on the reverse with a distinctive directional gradient. A close spread appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with both sets of doubling increasing from left to right. This left-to-right intensification is the geometric opposite of many contemporary nickel doubled dies and provides a useful diagnostic for distinguishing WDDR-002 from other 1968-D reverse varieties. Reverse die markers include a die scratch between the D of UNITED and the first S of STATES, a die scratch near the rim between the first S and first T of STATES, a slanted die scratch above the M of AMERICA, and a die scratch above MO of MONTICELLO. The obverse die shows no noted markers. The cluster of die scratches around the upper reverse legend creates a readily identifiable diagnostic pattern that complements the doubled die spread for attribution. This variety represents one of the earlier Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverses following the 1968 resumption of mintmark usage on the obverse.
