Description

A dual-error coin combining a cud with a strike through a die cap, this second documented cud for the 1968-D Jefferson Nickel records two independent minting anomalies on a single piece. The die cap occurs when a previously struck coin adheres to the upper die face and remains there, acting as an intermediary surface through which subsequent coins are struck — impressing a mirror-image ghost of the cap coin's design onto each new strike. When this die-cap condition coincided with a rim fracture producing the cud, the result was a coin bearing evidence of both structural die failure and a striking-process malfunction. Die caps develop when a struck coin fails to eject from the press and sticks to the hammer die, and each subsequent strike drives the cap further onto the die while striking new planchets through it. The cud would have appeared as a raised featureless mass at the rim regardless of the cap condition, since the missing rim section affected the die itself.
