Description

Ranked among the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties, the 1968-D WDDO-001 shows Class I, Rotated Hub Doubling with a close counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, and the designer's initials FS. Obverse die markers include a short die scratch to the lower right of the 6 in the date and die scratches below the E of WE, along with additional confirming markers for this die pair. Denver resumed its standard mintmark placement at the lower right reverse rim in 1968, after the mintmark-free years of 1965 through 1967. The "Best Of" designation reflects the relative strength and clarity of this variety's doubling compared to other Jefferson DDO candidates. Collectors typically confirm LIBERTY and the date first, then verify the FS initials and IN GOD WE TRUST under ten-power magnification for full attribution.
