1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Struck during the final year of 90% silver Washington Quarters, this 1964 regular strike carries spread towards the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, LIBERTY, and the bottom of the ribbon. The Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating quarters, making 1964 the last date for doubled die varieties on silver Washington Quarters. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Wexler 1964 25-cent WDDO-008, the variety shows center-directed displacement where the secondary impression shifts inward from the rim. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge northeast from the right side of the top of the G in GOD, plus a die crack across the base of the bust extending into the field on the left and into the ribbon and lower queue on the right. No significant reverse die markers were noted. The die crack traversing the bust base is particularly diagnostic because its path crosses multiple design elements — open field, bust truncation, ribbon, and hair queue — creating a long traceable line that confirms the correct die with high confidence before examining the doubling itself.
