1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

The 1964 WDDO-006 Washington quarter doubled die obverse exhibits notches on the upper left letters of LIBERTY along with slight doubling on the bottom of the ribbon behind Washington's queue. This coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter, making it one of the final silver quarters produced for circulation before the Coinage Act of 1965. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge above the left side of the first T in TRUST, die scratches running NW/SE to the left of the first T in TRUST, and a die crack running across the base of the bust into the lower queue. The reverse shows a die crack running down the eagle's right wing. These crack patterns suggest the die was examined at a relatively late stage of its working life. Cataloged by the Wexler Team with no known cross-references, this variety carries the Wexler Variety ID 1964 25c WDDO-006. John Flanagan's Washington quarter design, based on Jean-Antoine Houdon's 1785 bust of George Washington, has been in continuous use since 1932, making it one of the longest-running portrait designs in U.S. coinage.
