1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Spread towards the center is visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, while a spread towards the rim appears on the 9 in the date of this 1964 Washington Quarter. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1964 25c WDDO-003, with no other known cross-references. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge below the left side of the L in LIBERTY, a die crack running across the base of the bust and into the lower queue, and a die crack running east-west through the upper forehead and into the hair at the top of the head. On the reverse, a die crack runs down the eagle's right wing. The opposing spread directions — center-ward on the motto and rim-ward on the date — suggest a complex doubling mechanism where different areas of the die received displacement in different directions during the hubbing anomaly. The 1964 Washington Quarter was the final year of 90% silver composition before the Coinage Act of 1965 introduced clad coinage, making die varieties from this transitional date especially collectible among both silver coin enthusiasts and variety specialists.
