1964 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-007

Description

Unusual for extending its doubling onto a portrait feature, DDO-007 on the 1964 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel presents medium spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the front of Jefferson's shirt collar — a design element rarely cited as a pickup point in the series. Die markers UVC-1236 and DMR-009 fingerprint this working die. While most Jefferson nickel DDOs confine detectable doubling to inscriptions, the collar doubling on DDO-007 indicates the hub displacement direction aligned with the fine engraved lines of the collar in a way that produced visible offset on this textured surface. Felix Schlag's portrait renders the collar with delicate parallel lines representing fabric folds, and medium spread creates a perceptible thickening or shadowing effect along these lines. The 1964 nickel was the last year before the three-year mintmark removal period (1965-1967) and the final pre-shortage production year, when massive mintages were ordered to combat the national coin shortage. Struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) at Philadelphia without a mintmark, this coin comes from one of the highest-mintage years in Jefferson nickel history. Collectors should examine the collar area under 5x to 7x magnification with angled lighting.
