1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-024

Attributed by Frank Baumann, this 1964 Jefferson Nickel carries the WDDR-024 doubled die reverse classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling. A nice Class II spread shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing slightly from left to right across both inscriptions. The obverse displays a heavy die scratch running north from Jefferson's forehead, providing a strong diagnostic marker for identifying coins struck from this specific die. On the reverse, slanted die scratches appear inside the second U of UNUM. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1964 WDDR-024. The 1964 date represents the final year of standard-composition Jefferson Nickel production before the Mint discontinued proof coinage and mintmarks during the 1965-67 Special Mint Set period. With a WDDR catalog extending to at least twenty-four entries, the 1964 Philadelphia issue demonstrates extraordinary die variety depth.
