Description

This 1964 Jefferson Nickel carries a complex catalog history. Formerly designated WDDR-205, this variety was reassigned to replace the original WDDR-017, which was delisted after being reclassified as a doubled working hub (WWHR-002) rather than a doubled working die. Such catalog reassignments occur as ongoing research clarifies the mechanical origin of doubling, distinguishing between hub-level and die-level anomalies. The current WDDR-017 exhibits Class II hub doubling on the reverse. Discovered by Ben Peters, this variety benefits from the detailed attribution work that characterizes Wexler Team research on Jefferson Nickel varieties. Philadelphia struck over 1.02 billion nickels in 1964, the final year before the Coinage Act of 1965 transformed U.S. coinage composition, though the nickel denomination itself retained its 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy throughout the transition.
