1964 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024
Error
Description
Discovered by John Conway, this 1964 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel carries WDDO-024 designation for its strong counterclockwise spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the front of Jefferson's collar, generated from a Class V pivot point located at approximately two o'clock near the rim. The pivoted hub doubling creates angular displacement that intensifies with distance from the pivot, concentrating the most visible spread on the trust motto and collar area opposite the pivot. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge on the back of the collar, another die gouge in front of the collar, and a series of short die gouges under the ribbon, creating a cluster of diagnostics around the lower portrait. Reverse markers feature strong diagonal die scratches between both PL and LU of PLURIBUS. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1964 WDDO-024, this business strike variety's strong counterclockwise spread makes it one of the more visually accessible Jefferson Nickel doubled die obverses from the high-mintage 1964 production year, when Philadelphia struck enormous quantities to meet rising demand during the coin shortage era.
