1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020

Description

Twentieth in the Wexler catalog of doubled die obverses for the 1963 Proof Washington Quarter, WDDO-020 exhibits a very close spread toward the rim on IN GOD WE TRUST — similar in character to WDDO-009 but from a different working die. Two distinct die markers distinguish this die: a die scratch running WSW/ENE across the bottom front of the bust, and a die crack across the base of the bust. While the crack location echoes WDDO-009, the WSW/ENE die scratch provides an unambiguous differentiator, confirming two separate proof dies both received very close hub doubling on the motto. Twenty cataloged doubled die obverses for a single proof issue underscores the thoroughness with which collectors have examined 1963 proof quarters — driven partly by the coin's status as the final year of 90% silver production. Flanagan's portrait, modeled after Houdon's 1785 bust of Washington, appeared on polished silver planchets at 24.3mm. Examine IGWT for the very close spread, then locate the WSW/ENE scratch across the bust front and the base crack for full attribution.
