1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Identified on a silver proof struck at the Philadelphia Mint, WDDO-005 on the 1963 Washington Quarter shows very close spread towards center on IN GOD WE TRUST. This inward-directed spread pattern is characteristic of a hub impression where the die and hub were fractionally misaligned along a radial axis, compressing the design elements toward the coin's center rather than spreading them outward. Die markers on the reverse include a nearly horizontal die scratch between the eagle's upper legs and a short vertical die scratch to the right of the lower R in QUARTER. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. Cross-reference: Wexler Variety ID: 1963 25¢ Pr WDDO-005. The 1963 proof Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver, the final full year before the composition change to copper-nickel clad in 1965, making this one of the last silver proof quarters to carry a doubled die obverse from the original composition era.
