1963 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010
ErrorDescription
Tenth in the Wexler Team's doubled die obverse catalog for the 1963 Proof Washington Silver Quarter, WDDO-010 shows a spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, the designer's initials (JF), the bottom of the ribbon, and slightly on LIBERTY. The breadth of affected design elements — spanning both text inscriptions and sculptural features — indicates a hub doubling event that produced visible displacement across the entire obverse field rather than being confined to a single area. Die markers for attribution include a curving die scratch on the eagle's left wing south of the RI in AMERICA on the reverse, while no significant obverse markers have been identified. The Wexler designation "1963 25c Pr WDDO-010" confirms this as a proof-only variety. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design, introduced in 1932 for the bicentennial of Washington's birth, features the president's profile on the obverse with an heraldic eagle reverse — both elements that respond to hub doubling with varying degrees of visibility depending on the direction and magnitude of the spread. As a proof issue from the penultimate year of 90% silver quarter production, this variety occupies the intersection of silver-era proof collecting and die variety specialization. The proof striking process, with its polished surfaces and multiple impressions, provides ideal conditions for detecting even subtle doubling, contributing to the extensive catalog of proof-only doubled die varieties for this series.
