1962-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003

Description

Cataloged as DDO-003 in the VarietyVista attribution system (UVC-262, DMR-006), this 1962-D Franklin Half Dollar exhibits a medium double spread on the 62 of the date and a light triple spread on the legend TRUST. The coexistence of double and triple spreading on a single obverse die suggests at least two misaligned hubbing cycles were involved in die manufacture, with different portions of the obverse showing varying degrees of movement depending on their position relative to the pivot point. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A is cataloged as early die state, though its diagnostics remain unconfirmed. Stage B is cataloged as mid-die state, also unconfirmed. Stage C is the most precisely defined: a die crack on the lower front of the bust and a die break on the eagle's breast both appear at late die state.
