1962-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Eastward repunching on this 1962-D Franklin Half Dollar RPM-003 shows a D over D where the final impression was shifted to the right of the initial punch — leaving the first D's remnants displaced to the west of the final position. The eastward direction places this RPM in the same correction category as the 1958-D RPM-001, where the initial punch landed too far left. Among the four 1962-D RPMs, RPM-003's pure eastward displacement contrasts with RPM-001's bidirectional triple punch, RPM-002's diagonal northeast, and RPM-004's southward correction — collectively demonstrating four different displacement patterns on a single date-mint combination. The straight horizontal displacement of an eastward RPM produces a distinctive overlap where the initial D's vertical left stroke appears as a secondary line west of the final D's left edge, without the vertical displacement component seen in north/south or diagonal RPMs. The 1962-D was approaching the Franklin Half Dollar's conclusion — the 1963-D would be the series' last Denver issue before Kennedy's assassination changed American half dollar design history. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm.
