1962-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-001, this 1962-D Franklin Half Dollar shows a medium spread on the 2 of the date and LIBERTY, with a light triple spread on TRUST. Die markers UVC-190 and DMR-002 identify this specific working die. Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed); Stage B records a die crack on the lower front bust as Mid Die State, with the reverse also in MDS; Stage C is Late Die State (unconfirmed). The Stage B die crack on Franklin's lower front bust is the most reliably documentable diagnostic, as die cracks on the portrait area remain visible on moderately worn examples. The Franklin Half Dollar, designed by John R. Sinnock, was produced from 1948 through 1963, and 1962 was among the final years before the Kennedy Half Dollar replaced it. The 1962-D had a Denver Mint mintage of approximately 35.5 million coins. A doubled die obverse with a concurrent die crack provides two separately attributable features, making DDO-001 a variety of meaningful depth for the Franklin Half Dollar specialist.
