1962-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
A medium double spread on the 62 of the date combined with light triple spread on TRUST distinguishes this 1962 Denver Mint Franklin Half Dollar doubled die obverse, cataloged as DDO-002 with UVC-191 and DMR-003. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is an early die state identified by light east-west die scratches across both the obverse and reverse fields. Stage B transitions into a mid-die state on both sides as those scratches wear down under production pressure. Stage C, a late die state, remains unconfirmed. The triple spreading on TRUST is particularly notable — while the date doubling is the more immediately visible feature, the three distinct impressions visible in the motto letters indicate the die received at least three separate hubbing impressions with measurable displacement. John R. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar, struck in 90% silver, was produced from 1948 through 1963. The 1962-D issue represents one of the final Denver Mint Franklins before the Kennedy Half Dollar replaced the design in 1964.
