1960 Proof Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-017
Error
Description
Produced on a proof die at the Philadelphia Mint, WDDO-017 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Proof Small Date manifests a Class II spread towards the center on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, with the notable characteristic that the spread on IGWT decreases from left to right. This progressive diminution across the motto is a hallmark of rotational hub misalignment: letters positioned farther from the pivot point of rotation receive greater displacement, while those closer to the pivot show proportionally less. On this variety the I and N of IN display the strongest secondary impression, with the effect tapering through GOD, WE, and TRUST until the rightmost letters show only the faintest trace of doubling. The obverse carries a die gouge running from south-southwest to north-northeast through the hair on the upper part of the head between GOD and WE, along with a die scratch running from southwest to northeast to the left of and above the bowtie. On the reverse, a die scratch runs from north-northwest to south-southeast through the top of the Memorial and into the top of the 4th bay, and a short die scratch runs from south-southwest to north-northeast on the right base of the Memorial. The Small Date proof hub designation and approximately 3,000-impression die life together constrain the surviving population. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDO-017 with no other known cross-references.
