Description

Representing the inverse of WDDO-001, this variety was created when a Small Date hub was impressed over a Large Date hub, with the Small Date well centered over its predecessor. A strong spread to the west is visible on the BER of LIBERTY, and additional doubling appears on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Obverse die markers include several die scratches running through the upper ear and the hair just above the ear. On the reverse, a distinctive die scratch loops down from the bottom of the Memorial just to the left of the right post, then curves back up to the bottom of the Memorial above the right side of the T in CENT. Cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-01-1960-102 (024), Breen #2229, CONECA 2-O-III, and Coppercoins 1960P-1DO-002P, WDDO-002 is another proof-only variety with an estimated surviving population capped at roughly 3,000 specimens based on typical proof die longevity. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1c Pr WDDO-002, the westward spread on LIBERTY and the looping reverse die scratch provide definitive diagnostics for separating this variety from WDDO-001's southwestward spread.
