1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Produced when a Large Date hub was impressed well centered over a Small Date hub, WDDO-001 is a proof-only doubled die obverse on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent. The strongest doubling appears as a spread to the southwest on the BERTY of LIBERTY, with additional spread visible on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Obverse die markers include a short die gouge running southwest from the rim to the left of the I in IN, along with die scratches running east-northeast from the hair above the ear into the forehead. On the reverse, a vertical die scratch can be found in the upper 10th Memorial bay. Cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-01-1960-101 (025), Breen #2229, CONECA 1-O-III, and Coppercoins 1960P-1DO-003P, this is among the most extensively cataloged proof DDO varieties in the Lincoln Memorial series. Because proof dies typically produced no more than approximately 3,000 impressions before retirement, the surviving population of WDDO-001 is inherently limited. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1c Pr WDDO-001, this variety combines the desirability of a proof strike with the visual appeal of strong Large Date over Small Date hub doubling.
