Description

One of the most significant proof varieties in the entire 1960 Lincoln cent series, WDDO-001 on the Proof Small Date is a Large Date over Small Date variety — a Large Date hub was impressed well centered over a Small Date hub during die manufacture, creating a dramatic overdate-like effect unique to the 1960 proof production. The result is a spread to the southwest on the BERTY of LIBERTY, with some doubling also visible on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, as the larger date numerals and slightly repositioned legend elements from the Large Date hub overlay the Small Date design. This variety holds special importance for 1960 proof collectors because it documents the Philadelphia Mint's mid-year transition between hub designs directly on a single die, providing tangible physical evidence of the production changeover. The obverse carries a short die gouge running southwest from the rim to the left of the I in IN, along with die scratches running east-northeast from the hair above the ear into the forehead. On the reverse, a vertical die scratch can be found in the upper 10th Memorial bay. The proof format constrains the population to approximately 3,000 impressions per die, and the over-hub-type nature of the doubling — Large Date over Small Date — makes this one of the most sought-after 1960 proof cent varieties among specialists.
