1945 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

Struck on the wartime silver alloy Jefferson Nickel (35% silver, 56% copper, 9% manganese), WDDO-003 exhibits Class V pivoted hub doubling with a nice clockwise spread showing on LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Attributed by Mike Glavosek, this variety also carries a possible RPM#56 (P/P) repunched mintmark on the reverse, making it a potential combination variety. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die scratch to the lower right of the 5 of the date. Reverse markers include a die gouge to the right lower portion of the fourth column, vertical die scratches north-south above and in the right arch, a curving die gouge to the upper right of the C of CENTS, and a die break on the C of CENTS. The wartime large P mintmark above Monticello distinguishes these 1942-1945 silver alloy issues, and the Class V pivoted spread creates a rotational displacement on LIBERTY and the date.
