1945 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

The 1945 Wartime Silver Jefferson Nickel WDDO-001 exhibits Class V Pivoted Hub Doubling visible on IN GOD WE TRUST. This variety is cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V and also as RPM#17 — a doubly attributed coin exhibiting both a doubled die and a repunched mintmark on the same die. The wartime silver Jefferson Nickel series, struck from 1942 through 1945, used a 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese alloy, with the large P, D, or S mintmark placed above Monticello on the reverse to identify the silver composition. Obverse die markers include a slanted die scratch below the RT of LIBERTY and a die scratch in the field above the top of Jefferson's head at approximately 11 o'clock. Reverse markers include die scratches between L and O of MONTICELLO and above the right arch. The combination of a Class V pivoted hub DDO and an RPM on a wartime silver coin gives WDDO-001 exceptional appeal for the specialist. The Wexler Variety ID is 1945-P 5¢ WDDO-001.
