1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-010
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1645 with die marriage DMR-102, the 1945 Jefferson Nickel DDO-010 shows medium spread across the full obverse inscription set — IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date — on the final year of the wartime silver alloy composition. This variety is a confirmed dual variety: the reverse die is identified as RPM-091, a repunched mint mark, creating a coin with both doubled die obverse and repunched mint mark interest. In the earliest documented die state (EMDS — early-mid die state), the obverse shows initial deterioration while the reverse RPM-091 is also in early-mid state, with later MDS and LDS stages unconfirmed. The 1945 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel was struck in the emergency 56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese alloy, identified by its large P mint mark above Monticello — the first time the Philadelphia Mint mark appeared on any American coin. The medium-strength spread across multiple design elements combined with the reverse RPM makes DDO-010 a dual-variety coin that rewards examination on both sides.
