1945 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-006

Description

Sixth obverse doubled die documented for the 1945 Jefferson nickel, DDO-006 displays light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST across the upper obverse inscription on Felix Schlag's design. VarietyVista classified this variety under UVC-241 and DMR-051, with three die stages: Stage A where the obverse is at early-to-mid die state (EMDS) and the reverse is listed as RPM-050 also at EMDS, Stage B where both obverse and reverse have reached mid die state, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The cross-listing of the reverse as RPM-050 is a critical supplementary attribution — this die marriage pairs the DDO-006 obverse with a reverse die carrying repunched mintmark variety RPM-050, creating a dual-variety combination where collectors can attribute both obverse hub doubling and reverse mintmark repunching on a single coin. The 1945 Jefferson nickel was struck in the wartime silver alloy (56% copper, 35% silver, 9% manganese), with the large mintmark above Monticello on the reverse identifying the mint of origin. Philadelphia produced a substantial number of war nickels in 1945, the final year of the wartime composition before the return to standard copper-nickel in 1946. The EMDS (early-to-mid die state) designation for Stage A places initial production at the boundary between fresh and moderately worn die surfaces, and the concurrent EMDS rating for the RPM-050 reverse confirms both dies entered the pairing at similar wear levels.
