Description
The 1940 (S) Jefferson Nickel is a nickel from the San Francisco Mint, belonging to the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. With a mintage of 36.7 million, this is a less common issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 14% of total production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Steady pre-war production from all three mints. Denver mintage exceeded 43 million. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $19 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4009.
