1940-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1940-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003 on the Jefferson Nickel exhibits light spread on FIVE CENTS and the LLO of MONTICELLO. The Jefferson Nickel, designed by Felix Schlag and first issued in 1938, is struck in cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.00 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. The San Francisco Mint produced these with the small S mintmark on the reverse near the rim at right. Die markers assigned by VarietyVista include UVC-662 and DMR-007, with three documented die states: Stage A is Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B shows light die gouges through the leftmost window at Mid Die State along with a light die clash through the queue area also at MDS, and Stage C reaches Late Die State (unconfirmed). The 1940-S had a comparatively modest mintage that makes varieties from this date less frequently encountered in rolls and bags. Collectors examining this DDR should focus magnification on the letters FIVE CENTS and the terminal letters of MONTICELLO where the light doubling spread is most apparent, while using the leftmost window die gouges as the confirming attribution marker for this specific die pair.
