Part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series, the 1940 Jefferson Nickel is a nickel from the Philadelphia Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 176.5 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 69% of the year's production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. Steady pre-war production from all three mints. Denver mintage exceeded 43 million. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792.
