1940-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Attributed by Whaden Curtis and assigned the Wexler designation 1940-S WDDR-005, this San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickel presents Class II Distorted Hub Doubling — created when the working die and hub shift rotationally during die preparation. The doubling appears on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and MON through LO of MONTICELLO. Notably, tripling — where three distinct impressions are visible rather than two — is present on UNUM, the UN of UNITED, and the FI of FIVE, indicating this die received at least two misaligned secondary hub impressions. Tripled elements are less common than standard doubled features and represent dies that underwent multiple flawed hubbing cycles. Die markers include a long die scratch near the rim above the date on the obverse, a long curved scratch below the UM of UNUM, and a scratch to the right of the C of CENTS on the reverse. The 1940-S Jefferson Nickel was struck during the final pre-war years of normal nickel-alloy production, before the wartime composition change of 1942-1945 altered the series' metallurgy.
